BONNERS FERRY, Idaho — Panhandle Health District officials said two dead horses that died tested positive for West Nile Virus in Boundary County.
Officials said the horses were unvaccinated and this is the first evidence of mosquitos potentially carrying West Nile Virus in Boundary County in almost two years.
“We know mosquitos carrying West Nile can live in North Idaho and mosquito pools have tested positive in the past,” said Jeff Lee, Staff Epidemiologist at Panhandle Health District said in a press release.
Health officials said West Nile Virus is a potentially serious illness that is usually spread to animals and humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
People are recommended to reduce exposure to and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitos.
