LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A larger-than-life-size bronze statue of legendary racehorse Secretariat is making its way to Lexington all the way from Norman, Oklahoma.
That is where sculptor Jocelyn Russell was working hard on the Triple Crown winner’s likeness.
“The scope of it is very intimidating, but I was excited to do it anyhow,” said Russell.
The statue is the largest ever rendering of Secretariat, standing about 13 feet tall and weighing around 4,000 pounds. It also features jockey Ron Turcotte riding on top.
Commissioned by The Triangle Foundation, the legendary racehorse will be displayed in the middle of the roundabout at Old Frankfort Pike and Alexandria Drive.
“It’s kind of a gateway going out to the bluegrass, as you go out to the farms on Old Frankfort and also coming in. It’s going to be quite impressive,” said Steve Grossman, the president of The Triangle Foundation.
There will be an unveiling and dedication ceremony at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Keeneland. On Monday, the Secretariat statue will be moved to its new home for drivers and other spectators to see.
“As you’re going out of town, to the left before you get to the roundabout, there will be a parking area and a viewing area for anybody who would like to stop and take pictures and so forth,” said Grossman.
While the statue will be placed at the roundabout next week, it will be covered until landscaping work is finished in the area.
